Colin Coyne, a former walk-on forward and student assistant coach for Tennessee Basketball, has stepped into the role of graduate assistant with the Vols. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business analytics in 2023 and is now working towards a master’s degree in business administration.
Hailing from Fredericksburg, Va., Coyne was part of the Tennessee roster for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He returned to the program in August 2024 as a student assistant coach before transitioning to a graduate assistant position this month.
During Coyne’s time on the roster, Tennessee posted a 52-20 record, including a 30-8 finish last season. As a player, he was part of teams that reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, before contributing to the Vols’ return to the Elite Eight last season.
Tennessee hired Amorrow Morgan to replace Rod Clark
For the 2025-26 season, Rick Barnes will welcome two new members to his coaching staff.
On May 2, Tennessee announced the hiring of Amorrow Morgan, who was previously an assistant coach at Florida State and spent the last two seasons at Cal. Morgan had accepted a position at FSU in early April but was recruited by the Vols to take over for Rod Clark, who left on April 30 to join Darian DeVries’ staff at Indiana.
Morgan, a 2012 graduate of Idaho State and originally from Memphis, has also coached at Loyola-Chicago, South Alabama, Nicholls State, Henderson State, the University of Illinois Springfield, and Our Lady of the Lake University.
“He is a young, energetic coach,” Barnes remarked, “with a keen basketball intellect who will have an immediate impact on our program. I am confident he will do everything possible to help our players excel and that he will fit seamlessly into the strong culture we’ve established.”
Vols add coaching veteran in assistant coach Steve McClain
On May 13, the Vols announced the addition of assistant coach Steve McClain, a coaching veteran with 43 years of experience who spent the last three seasons at Texas under former Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry.
At 62 years old, McClain achieved a record of 157-115 during his eight seasons as head coach at Wyoming. He has also held head coaching positions at Hutchinson Community College and Illinois-Chicago, and has worked as an assistant coach at TCU, Colorado, Indiana, and Georgia since starting his career in 1982.
“Steve is an experienced coach who has accomplished a great deal over more than four decades,” Barnes stated. “It was an obvious choice to bring him on board at Tennessee, and we’re thrilled to have him with us.
“His experience, coaching expertise, and commitment to his players will be invaluable. I am confident that Steve will dedicate himself fully to Tennessee every day and that our program will thrive thanks to his passion.”
