Rangers and Cardinals Linked in Trade Rumors for Star Closer
The Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals could be on the verge of a major trade this season, centered around star closer Ryan Helsley.
As the Cardinals remain in contention this year, trading their star reliever might seem counterintuitive, but Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants recently proposed a trade that could benefit St. Louis by upgrading their roster. Jacobs suggested the possibility of the Cardinals sending Helsley to the Rangers, a move that could help St. Louis bolster its major league lineup.
“Across baseball, there are already multiple teams urgently seeking bullpen help, and that demand is likely to increase as the trade deadline draws closer,” Jacobs wrote. “Teams like the Diamondbacks, Phillies, Rangers, and Cubs are in need, and at least three of them would likely show interest in Helsley.”
While it may seem strange to trade an elite closer like Helsley in exchange for roster improvements, Jacobs pointed out that the move could help the Cardinals strengthen their future prospects while still remaining competitive.
Although Helsley’s power arm and rare velocity make him an indispensable asset for St. Louis, a trade might be the right call if the team is focused on long-term success rather than just this season.
If the Cardinals were to strike a deal with the Rangers, they could target top prospects like Kumar Rocker or Alejandro Rosario as the centerpiece of the trade. This would benefit both teams: the Rangers could bring Helsley on board for a postseason push this year while also aiming to re-sign him in the offseason, and the Cardinals would secure a significant prospect haul to help improve their team in the years to come.
