A former Giants power hitter is changing teams.
Following San Francisco designating infielder David Villar for assignment on May 19, the 28-year-old cleared waivers and chose to become a free agent. He has since signed a minor-league contract with the New York Mets, as reported by MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo on Tuesday, citing a source.

Villar played seven seasons in the Giants’ minor-league system and was named the Pacific Coast League MVP in 2022 while with the Sacramento River Cats.
During his four seasons in the major leagues with San Francisco, Villar had a batting line of .200/.292/.391, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 41 runs over 383 plate appearances.
