Speculation arose almost immediately after the end of the 2024 Major League Baseball season that the St. Louis Cardinals were planning to overhaul their roster.
In 2024, the Cardinals improved their performance and finished with a winning record, but they expressed a desire to “reset” during the offseason, which led to expectations of potential trades. High-profile veterans like Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Willson Contreras were mentioned as trade candidates, but ultimately none were dealt.
As they began the 2025 season, the Cardinals maintained a roster quite similar to the previous year, leading to rampant speculation about possible trades. Social media was abuzz with numerous wild mock trade scenarios involving the team.
However, St. Louis found its footing in May, achieving a 31-24 record and now trailing only the Chicago Cubs in the standings. After months of indications pointing towards a potential firesale, the situation appears to have shifted. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak recently spoke with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, suggesting the team might not be looking to sell after all.
“Given the past couple of years, creating a positive atmosphere at the ballpark is important,” Mozeliak told Goold. “We approached this year understanding it would be an opportunity for players, and how they perform will influence our next steps. So, while the public viewed us as sellers—whether in the offseason or at the trade deadline—it could look quite different based on our current performance.”
