College football analyst Paul Finebaum has criticized Tennessee’s quarterback situation, stating they lack playoff potential.
This offseason, skepticism around Tennessee has grown, particularly after their inaugural college football playoff appearance last season, with few expecting a repeat performance.
On a recent ESPN segment, Finebaum didn’t hold back when discussing Tennessee’s chances. He was questioned about the Volunteers’ quarterback situation and made it clear he believes it’s problematic, asserting they aren’t equipped for a playoff run.
“Not fine,” he remarked. “The departure of Nico [Iamaleava] was the offseason’s biggest storyline. Joey Aguilar, who transferred from App State via UCLA, isn’t the ideal solution. He’s decent, but not exceptional. Nico had the potential to be great, even if he didn’t shine last year. Honestly, I’m not optimistic about Tennessee making the playoffs.”
Tennessee faces numerous uncertainties this season. Can Aguilar be the solution at quarterback? Will the run game maintain its strength without Dylan Sampson? Will the wide receivers rise to the occasion? Can the offensive line cope with several losses? And when will Jermod McCoy be back from his knee injury?
Head coach Josh Heupel has demonstrated his ability to achieve consistent success in Knoxville, but this could be his toughest challenge since he first took the helm.
