Cowboys Expected to Make Trade for $54 Million Playmaker David Njoku
The Dallas Cowboys have already stirred excitement this NFL offseason with multiple trades, and now speculation is growing that even bigger moves could be on the horizon. Former NFL quarterback and analyst Kurt Benkert has made several predictions regarding the Cowboys’ potential roster moves, and one of the most intriguing is a trade for Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku.
On a Bleacher Report live stream, Benkert said, “If you add Njoku with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens, that could be a real problem for defenses. Send him to the Cowboys whenever the Browns decide to hit the reset button. Get some draft picks in return.” He added that a trade for Njoku could make the Cowboys’ offense even more dangerous.
Njoku’s Contract Situation Makes a Deal Possible
Njoku, who is entering the final year of a four-year, $54.7 million contract, could be a tempting addition for the Cowboys. With an $11.4 million cap hit in 2025 before hitting free agency next offseason, Njoku’s contract situation makes him a potential short-term option for Dallas, though not a long-term commitment.
On the surface, adding Njoku would be more of a luxury move for the Cowboys rather than a necessity. The team already has Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker as the primary tight ends. Even if it’s just a one-year rental, acquiring Njoku could be a pricey decision for Dallas.
Njoku’s Potential Fit with the Cowboys
Njoku had a productive 2024 season with 64 receptions for 505 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games. His breakout year came in 2023, when he earned a Pro Bowl nod with 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns.
It’s important to note that much of Njoku’s production came in a Browns offense that didn’t have the same level of playmakers as the Cowboys’ offense could provide. The addition of Njoku could significantly elevate Dallas’ offensive capabilities, especially with Brian Schottenheimer taking over as the new offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer’s influence is already being felt, with Dak Prescott praising the changes.
Prescott told The Athletic, “Schotty’s doing it the right way… I see the way people are buying into it, and it’s hard for me to think anything different.” If Njoku were to join, the Cowboys’ offense could see even more explosive potential with his skills alongside Prescott, Lamb, and others.
