Kansas Basketball Veteran Fred Quartlebaum to Depart After Over a Decade with Jayhawks
Fred Quartlebaum, a long-time member of the Kansas basketball staff, is leaving the program after more than 12 seasons with the Jayhawks. Kansas Athletics confirmed the news Thursday morning.
During his tenure, Quartlebaum held multiple roles, including director of student-athlete development. He was a key figure on the coaching staff that helped secure the 2022 national championship and played a significant role in the development of 22 players who eventually made it to the NBA.
Quartlebaum, who has also worked at institutions like Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Iowa State, was widely respected as one of the top assistants in the Big 12.

Kansas head coach Bill Self expressed his gratitude, saying, “He’s been the primary person in charge of working with the players and developing a culture within our program. He’s done a fantastic job and will be missed. I’m excited for him and Christy as they move into another phase in their lives.”
Quartlebaum’s departure marks the second staff change this offseason, following the retirement of Norm Roberts, with whom Quartlebaum worked for six years at St. John’s. Kansas also brought in former NBA head coach Jacque Vaughn to fill Roberts’ position.
In addition, Kansas promoted Lexi Price to the role of men’s basketball director of operations, a position previously held by Quartlebaum. Price, who has been the office manager at Kansas since December 2021, will now take on this new responsibility.
