The Iowa Hawkeyes couldn’t start June on a positive note, as head coach Kirk Ferentz and the team lost out on a highly sought-after recruit from the 2026 class.
On3Sports’ Hayes Fawcett reported on Sunday night that four-star safety Gavin Day has chosen to commit to Washington, turning down several top programs, including the Hawkeyes.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 190 lbs, Day was an attractive safety prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, known for his versatility and athleticism on defense. His ability to serve in a hybrid safety/linebacker role made him a standout, excelling in both coverage and run defense. Day was ranked as the No. 30 safety in the 2026 cycle and the No. 2 player in Nevada, according to 247Sports’ Composite Ratings.
Losing Day is a significant setback for Ferentz and the Hawkeyes, as he would have been the fifth four-star commit in their 2026 class. Fortunately, Iowa is scheduled to welcome several talented defenders during the 2026 recruiting cycle, including safety CJ Hester and linebacker Julian Manson, both four-star prospects who will visit on June 20.
