Royals Eye Ex-Yankees and Blue Jays Gold Glove Winner as Trade Deadline Target
With the July 31 trade deadline fast approaching, the Kansas City Royals have some important decisions to make.
Currently outside the playoff picture, the Royals need to improve, especially offensively, where they have underperformed. While they aren’t expected to become championship contenders overnight, they need to be more competitive than a bottom-five offensive team. At the deadline, acquiring hitters who can provide immediate help and contribute defensively would be key.
One potential target, according to Royals Review’s Matt Chabot, is Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The 30-year-old has played for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays during his up-and-down career, earning a Gold Glove at third base in 2020.
Chabot highlighted Kiner-Falefa’s best offensive season to date, with career highs in several key categories. While his defense has been less stellar this year, Kiner-Falefa remains a versatile player, capable of covering almost any position. He’s also stolen double-digit bases every season since 2021.
This season, Kiner-Falefa has a .738 OPS and a 106 OPS+ through 48 games. Though he’s been the Pirates’ everyday shortstop, he has ample experience at third, second, and even outfield positions. Despite his struggles defensively this year, his versatility and offensive upside could make him a valuable addition for the Royals, offering more than simply standing pat.
