NHL Insider Suggests Stars Could Trade Top Forward to Pursue Mitch Marner in the Offseason
After their disappointing exit from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where the Dallas Stars were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in a five-game Western Conference finals series, significant changes could be on the horizon for the team. NHL insider Jeff Marek discussed the situation on The Sheet podcast, hinting that the Stars may consider trading star winger Jason Robertson in the offseason.
Robertson is entering the final year of his contract in the 2025–26 season and will become an unrestricted free agent thereafter. Currently earning $7.75 million annually, the 25-year-old is expected to demand a contract that places him among the league’s highest-paid forwards. Given that the Stars have already committed a hefty long-term deal to Mikko Rantanen, they might feel it’s more beneficial to reallocate that money to address other needs on the roster.
Marek speculated that Dallas could be a surprising contender for Mitch Marner in free agency, suggesting that a trade involving Robertson could help free up the cap space needed to make a run at the Toronto Maple Leafs star.
“Dallas would be interesting and maybe one of the ways that you get there is if you end up dealing someone like Jason Robertson, who’s a restricted free agent after one more year. … Maybe that happens,” said Marek. “I think Dallas is going to very much be … ‘We’re out there shopping, and we’re out there for big fish.'”
Robertson led the Stars in goals this past season with 35 and has been their top goal scorer in three of the last four years. However, if trading him opens the door to landing Marner, it seems that Dallas could be willing to part ways with the former second-round pick to strengthen their championship hopes.
