Chicago White Sox Sign Pitcher Tyler Alexander
The Chicago White Sox have signed left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander to a one-year, $760,000 contract, aiming to strengthen their pitching staff following recent injuries.
The 30-year-old Alexander brings seven years of Major League experience, having played as both a starter and reliever for the Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Detroit Tigers. He posted a 6.19 ERA over 36.1 innings with the Brewers in 2025.
In addition to the Alexander signing, the White Sox made two other roster moves on Sunday. Left-hander Jared Shuster was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hand blister, while lefty Fraser Ellard was moved to the 60-day IL with a left lat strain.
Alexander was designated for assignment by the Brewers on June 1 and released on Friday. In 2025, he made four starts and appeared in 17 relief outings, recording a 6.19 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, 12 walks, and 30 strikeouts.
Starting the season in a bulk role, Alexander pitched between 3 to 5.2 innings in four of his first six appearances. He had a solid start, throwing 5.2 shutout innings in his first outing, but struggled in subsequent starts, allowing six earned runs over 7.2 innings. He also recorded his first career save in a three-inning performance, although he blew a save in his next outing.
Alexander was initially stretched out with three straight appearances of 79+ pitches but saw his role change in May, limiting him to no more than 33 pitches and 2.2 innings in his final 15 appearances with the Brewers. In his last appearance, he gave up five earned runs in just one inning.
The 2025 season saw Alexander relying on a mix of fastballs (90.2 mph average), cutters (86.3 mph), and sinkers (90 mph), each thrown between 21.8% and 27% of the time. He also featured a 76.9 mph slider (11.4%) and an 82.9 mph changeup (13.1%).
In 2024, Alexander pitched 107.2 innings for the Tampa Bay Rays, posting a 5.10 ERA, and 35.2 innings for the Rays’ Triple-A affiliate with a 4.54 ERA.
The bulk of his MLB career came with the Detroit Tigers from 2019 to 2023, where he made 43 starts and 77 relief appearances. His standout season came in 2021, when he posted a career-high 2.0 WAR with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 106.1 innings.
