Angels Acquire Outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. from NL Contender, DFA Pitcher
The Los Angeles Angels have traded for outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. from the San Francisco Giants, sending either a player to be named later or cash considerations in return.
As part of the transaction, the Angels designated right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks for assignment. This deal, orchestrated by Angels GM Perry Minasian and Giants GM Zack Minasian, comes as a bit of a surprise for the Angels.
Wade, who has a career batting average of .238, is hitting just .167 so far this season. The 31-year-old has primarily played first base for the Giants over the past two years but has also logged some time in the outfield and as a designated hitter.
Given that Jorge Soler is again dealing with a groin issue that could land him on the injured list, the trade makes more sense. However, with three-time MVP Mike Trout nearing a return, it’s likely he’ll reclaim his spot in the outfield, which could limit Wade’s role.
As for first base, there’s still uncertainty. Nolan Schanuel, who is batting .277 this season, appears secure in his defensive position.

This acquisition could be a move to bolster depth within the clubhouse and provide additional experience to complement the team’s youth movement in Anaheim.
Wade had a strong 2023 season, finishing with 17 home runs, 45 RBIs, and a bWAR of 2.8. Both in 2023 and 2024, he posted an OPS+ of 120, 20% above the league average.
One of Wade’s main strengths is his impressive plate discipline. He ranks in the 99th percentile in MLB for not chasing pitches outside the strike zone, swinging at only 16.1% of them. His walk rate is 12.4%, placing him in the 83rd percentile, while his strikeout rate is slightly higher than average at 20.7%, in the 56th percentile.
Though the purpose of acquiring Wade may not be immediately clear, fans are hopeful that his impact will become evident soon on the field.
