Cardinals Could Package All-Star Closer With $260 Million Gold Glover In Blockbuster

Cardinals Could Bundle All-Star Closer with $260 Million Gold Glove Winner in Major Trade

The St. Louis Cardinals are exceeding expectations this season, with a 36-29 record that has them only four games behind in the National League Central. While they were not anticipated to be contenders, their strong performance has placed them in a favorable position as potential buyers at the trade deadline.

However, the Cardinals also have valuable assets that other playoff-contending teams might target this summer. One player who could be on the move is All-Star closer Ryan Helsley, who is in the final year of his contract.

John Denton of MLB.com speculates that the Cardinals could combine Helsley with another key player, creating a blockbuster trade package.

“Helsley, still hoping to secure a long-term deal with the Cardinals, hasn’t been as effective this year compared to his record-breaking 2024 season, where he set a club record with 49 saves. So far, he’s 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA and has converted 13 of 17 save opportunities. However, his strikeout rate has dropped (29.7% to 25.2%), and his walk rate has risen (8.6% to 11.7%). Could the Cardinals potentially package Helsley and veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado in a major trade at the deadline?” Denton wrote.

The Cardinals had been attempting to trade Arenado throughout the offseason, and the upcoming trade deadline could provide a new window to move him.

This trade would open up third base for players like Nolan Gorman or even Thomas Saggese, while also giving the Cardinals a chance to gain valuable prospects in exchange for Helsley.
