Mark Pope details the phone call from Otega Oweh’s return

Pope said he nearly got thrown out of a plane.

Most of the Kentucky Wildcats roster is in Lexington as summer practices are set to start in a few weeks. But before that, the team is hosting their annual summer camps.

There are many new arrivals in Lexington, but one significant returning player is senior guard Otega Oweh. His return was met with celebration by the BBN, but it seems no one was as thrilled as Coach Mark Pope.

During the camp this weekend, Oweh took the mic and asked Coach Pope how he learned about his return. Pope’s response will definitely get you hyped.

“I was on a plane, and somehow the call came through,” Pope explained. “Otega called me and said, ‘Coach, let’s do this. I’m coming back.’

“I was looking around, thinking the pilot might kick me out of the plane.”

It sounds like Coach Pope had quite the exhilarating flight!

Having Oweh return is a significant boost for the program as they enter year two of this new chapter. Not only does he bring a stable veteran presence who understands the system, but he’s also a strong candidate for pre-season All-American honors.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting year!
