Tennessee Football Reportedly Adds Former Vols Standout Marion Hobby to Coaching Staff
Marion Hobby, a former Tennessee star and experienced NFL assistant, is expected to join the Volunteers’ coaching staff for the 2025 season, according to a report by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
Hobby earned first-team All-SEC honors as a defensive end under legendary Vols coach Johnny Majors and was later selected to Tennessee’s 100th anniversary football team in recognition of his collegiate career.
Drafted 74th overall in the 1990 NFL Draft, Hobby played for the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots until his retirement in 1992.
He began his coaching journey in 1995 at UT Martin as a strength and conditioning coach and returned to Tennessee in a similar capacity during the 1998 season.
Hobby’s SEC coaching experience also includes a stint at Ole Miss, where he served as defensive line coach from 1999 to 2004.
From 2011 to 2016, Hobby was co-defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach at Clemson, before moving to the NFL, where he coached defensive lines for the Jaguars, Dolphins, and most recently, the Bengals.
Tennessee’s defense excelled last season, ranking among the nation’s best. The Vols were 7th nationally in scoring defense, 10th in rushing yards allowed (103 yards per game), and 6th in total defense (293 yards per game). They also ranked in the top 10 for tackles for loss and third-down defense.
