Saints’ Bold Trade Proposal Could Land $72 Million 3x All-Pro Jalen Ramsey in New Orleans
The New Orleans Saints appear to be betting on a playoff run in 2025, despite having a rookie quarterback and a rough five-win season last year. This offseason, they’ve cleared every dollar they can to bring in free agents, including signing defensive end Chase Young and safety Justin Reid to three-year deals.
While their salary cap situation is far from ideal, the Saints might believe that securing an NFC South title could be within reach with a subpar eight-win record. If that’s the case, they could go all-in.
Luke Loffredo from Saints Wire proposed a daring move on Monday: trading for Miami Dolphins’ three-time All-Pro cornerback, Jalen Ramsey.
“Ramsey has expressed admiration for Saints defensive coordinator Staley, calling him ‘the best defensive coordinator’ he’s played for. When Staley was hired, Ramsey even posted a supportive message on social media, fueling the speculation,” wrote Loffredo.
Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowler, is undeniably talented, but his three-year, $72 million extension with Miami means the Saints would be committed to him through 2028 unless they’re willing to absorb a significant dead cap hit ($18 million) if they cut him after 2025.
“The Saints have a promising but largely untested group of cornerbacks. To strengthen the position and re-establish their reputation for a dominant defense, acquiring Jalen Ramsey could be a game-changer. With his familiarity with Staley and a clear need at cornerback, this move seems too logical to overlook,” Loffredo added.
While it might be risky for the Saints to tie themselves to Ramsey for the long term, especially with the chance they won’t be contenders this season, it’s not completely out of the question given how the Saints perceive their playoff chances.
