Three-Star Running Back from Nebraska Pledges to Illinois Football Program

Three-Star Nebraska RB Nelsyn Wheeler Commits to Illinois Football

Nelsyn Wheeler, a running back from Millard South High School in Omaha, Nebraska, announced his commitment to Illinois on Tuesday.

With quarterback Luke Altmeyer opting to stay at Illinois and the entire offensive line returning for the 2025 season, the Illini offense is in solid hands for the immediate future. But what about beyond that?

Thanks to head coach Bret Bielema’s recent success in recruiting, the Illinois offense is poised for even greater things in the years ahead. Bielema has already secured a commitment from four-star recruit and two-sport athlete Nasir Rankin. Additionally, three-star wide receiver Will Vala pledged to Illinois on Monday. On Tuesday, Wheeler, a three-star running back, followed suit, committing to the Illini.

During his junior year at Grand Island (Nebraska), Wheeler rushed for 1,032 yards and seven touchdowns, along with 10 catches for 61 yards. The 5-foot-9, 200-pound back chose Illinois over several other Big Ten schools, including Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Wisconsin, and held 14 scholarship offers in total.

Wheeler’s visit to Champaign over the weekend appears to have sealed the deal. While he may not contribute immediately on offense, his speed and athleticism make him a strong candidate for special teams, potentially even as a return specialist.

Bielema’s continued success in recruiting is bolstering an already impressive 2026 class, marking a significant improvement over the results of previous Illinois coaching staffs. Early signs suggest his 2027 class is shaping up similarly well.
