Brewers Pitcher Aaron Civale Requests Trade After Rotation Change
The Milwaukee Brewers are facing a tough decision this week, as they prepare to call up top prospect Jacob Misiorowski to make his major league debut on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. In response to Misiorowski joining the rotation, the Brewers are planning to shift veteran starter Aaron Civale to the bullpen. However, manager Pat Murphy acknowledged that the move is a difficult one, especially considering Civale’s long history as a starting pitcher.
“With Jacob Misiorowski joining the rotation, we plan to use Aaron Civale out of the bullpen,” Murphy explained. “It’s not that he hasn’t been pitching well—he has. We just think he’s the best candidate for this role right now.”
Murphy also admitted that the decision is significant for Civale, particularly because the pitcher has been a starter throughout his career and is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. “Yeah, he’s not happy,” Murphy said, recognizing that the move is a tough one from the player’s perspective.
It seems that “not happy” may have been an understatement. On Thursday, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported that Civale has officially requested a trade from the Brewers.
“Veteran right-hander Aaron Civale, who was bumped from the Brewers’ rotation by top prospect Jacob Misiorowski, has asked to be traded,” the report stated. Civale’s agent, Jack Toffey, confirmed that the request was made directly to Brewers GM Matt Arnold after Civale was informed of the bullpen move.
“The conversation was very professional,” Toffey said. “I just respectfully conveyed that Aaron would like an opportunity to continue his career as a starter. He’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year.”
Now the question remains: will Milwaukee honor Civale’s trade request?
