Cardinals and Phillies Linked to Potential Major Trade for $81 Million Star
The St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies are once again rumored to be involved in a significant trade for a star pitcher.
Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley has faced some struggles recently, but his trade value remains strong, making him a prime candidate to be dealt for a substantial return this season.
While multiple teams could be in the mix for the hard-throwing right-hander, the Phillies are emerging as the most likely suitor. Matt Grazel of FanSided recently suggested that Philadelphia should target Helsley before the trade deadline. This isn’t the first time the two teams have been connected in trade rumors involving the reliever.
“The Phillies have been linked to Ryan Helsley since April, even before José Alvarado’s suspension,” Grazel wrote. “Despite the current state of the Phillies’ bullpen, the team will look to add another reliever before the trade deadline, especially with Alvarado’s suspension. Helsley could still be dealt by the Cardinals, even as they remain in the Wild Card race.”
Grazel also noted that Helsley is expected to be one of the most sought-after pitchers leading up to the July 31 deadline. Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, will need backup plans if he can’t secure Helsley, though it may be worth trading prospects for him, especially if the team can lock him down with a contract extension.
This trade idea makes sense for both clubs.
Philadelphia is in need of a reliable closer, and Helsley is expected to be the best option available. With plenty of prospect capital, the Phillies can afford to make a big move.
On the flip side, the Cardinals are unlikely to re-sign Helsley when his contract expires at season’s end. Spotrac estimates his next deal could be worth $81 million, a figure that is likely beyond St. Louis’ budget. Trading him now would give the Cardinals a chance to secure a massive prospect haul for a player who is likely to leave in free agency.
