One Potential Blockbuster Trade for the Cleveland Browns We Can’t Rule Out
Despite a relatively quiet offseason, the Cleveland Browns might still pull off a major trade before the 2025 NFL season begins.
Aside from extending defensive end Myles Garrett and drafting quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland’s offseason has been uneventful, largely due to limited financial flexibility entering free agency. Following a disappointing 3-14 season, many anticipated that the Browns would trade away some veterans. However, they’ve opted for a “soft rebuild” rather than a full roster overhaul.
That said, we can’t completely rule out the possibility of the Browns making a big trade before Week 1, and one intriguing option remains: dealing cornerback Denzel Ward.
Ward, one of the top cornerbacks in the league, had an outstanding 2024 season, recording 49 tackles, two interceptions, and leading the NFL with 19 passes defended. At just 28 years old, he’s under contract through 2027. However, his concussion history is a significant concern. Having suffered six concussions throughout his career, including one against the Ravens last October, Ward’s long-term health could be an issue. This raises questions about his future in the NFL.
Given his medical history and the Browns’ likely rebuild, it might make sense for Cleveland to trade Ward now while his value is still high. Cornerbacks are extremely valuable in today’s pass-heavy NFL, which makes even average corners highly sought after. Ward, given his skill set and affordable contract, could fetch a substantial return in a trade.
Would Cleveland really consider moving the four-time Pro Bowler at this stage of the offseason? It’s possible. The Miami Dolphins are doing something similar with cornerback Jalen Ramsey, so the Browns could follow suit with Ward.
With many teams around the league in need of a top cornerback, the Browns would have strong leverage in negotiations, especially with three years remaining on Ward’s deal. If another team steps up with a significant offer, Cleveland could decide to part ways with their standout corner.
