New Jersey Devils Actively Exploring NHL Trade Market for Forward Upgrades

The New Jersey Devils are reportedly busy searching the NHL trade market, with several intriguing names now available. General manager Tom Fitzgerald has made it clear that improving the team’s scoring depth is a priority heading into the 2024-25 season.

While the Devils’ star players—Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, and Timo Meier—all had strong individual performances, the team was still eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Depth scoring was a major issue, and Fitzgerald has acknowledged the need for changes to address this gap.

A top-six forward is likely needed to push everyone down the depth chart and provide a more balanced attack. As the Stanley Cup Final draws to a close, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Devils are actively exploring trade possibilities.

Three Forwards the Devils Should Target:

1. J.J. Peterka
   J.J. Peterka, the 23-year-old forward from the Buffalo Sabres, has generated trade buzz lately. His agent, Allen Walsh, has reportedly been driving the discussions, which have caught the attention of Devils’ rival, the New York Rangers. However, the Devils could offer a more enticing package of assets.

   Peterka, a restricted free agent, had a standout season last year with 28 goals and 68 points. He’s projected to sign a long-term deal worth around $8 million per year, and he’s expected to be a consistent 30-goal scorer. If the Sabres are open to trading Peterka, the Devils should seriously consider pursuing him.

2. Martin Necas
   Martin Necas, who recently had a successful stint with the Colorado Avalanche, may be available due to dissatisfaction with his current situation. Entering the final year of his contract with a $6.5 million AAV, Necas is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

   Despite strong chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon, Necas has reportedly expressed unhappiness in Colorado. If the Avalanche are willing to move him, Fitzgerald should inquire about the cost. Necas could thrive in the Devils’ top-six, potentially forming a great partnership with players like Hughes and Bratt.

3. Jason Robertson
   Jason Robertson, the Dallas Stars’ prolific forward, may be another high-profile player available on the trade market. After the Stars’ early playoff exit, rumors are swirling that Robertson could be on the move. Known for his scoring ability, including multiple seasons with over 40 goals, Robertson would be an incredible addition to the Devils’ offense.

   If Robertson becomes truly available, Fitzgerald should make a strong push to acquire him, as he would immediately become a top scoring threat for New Jersey.
