Nationals Call Up Former Dodgers Reliever, Place Andrew Chafin on IL
The Washington Nationals have made some roster changes following recent injuries.
Despite efforts to improve in 2025, the Nationals remain well below the .500 mark and are likely to become sellers as the summer approaches. The season has been disappointing, and things seem to be heading in the wrong direction. The rebuild is progressing slowly, with some promising pieces but still plenty of areas that need work.
One of those areas is the bullpen, which has been inconsistent this year. Recently, the team took a hit with left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin heading to the injured list.
To fill his spot, the Nationals called up right-handed pitcher Ryan Loutos, who they recently claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Chafin has been one of the team’s top relievers this season, posting a 3.18 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched. While his WHIP is on the higher side, he has found ways to work around trouble. His absence will be noticeable in the bullpen.
Loutos has had limited action in the majors this year with the Dodgers, struggling in two appearances where he allowed five runs. However, he was effective in the minors, posting a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 innings for Los Angeles.
The Nationals will be hoping they get the version of Loutos who thrived in the minors, as they look to bolster their bullpen for the stretch ahead.
