Texas Tech Draws National Attention for Aggressive NIL Strategy, Critics Call It Unfair

Texas Tech has found itself in the national spotlight thanks to its bold approach to NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals, and while the Red Raiders are celebrating, not everyone is on board.

The university has fully embraced NIL to fuel its push for championships, and the scale of its investments is drawing significant attention. Reports suggest that Texas Tech has poured nearly $30 million into this year’s football roster alone. In men’s basketball, star forward JT Toppin is reportedly securing a $4 million NIL deal to stay for one more season. Meanwhile, on the softball team, standout pitcher NiJaree Canady has signed two separate $1 million deals, and the team has also landed three All-American transfers, largely thanks to NIL money.

According to CBS Sports, Texas Tech is expected to spend around $55 million across all athletic programs in 2025, including NIL and revenue sharing, potentially outspending any other college in the country.

I'm fascinated by Texas Tech's quest to buy its way to a softball title.

In addition to NiJa Canady's $1M+ extension, it has added three All-Americans and UCLA's top pitcher in the portal. In a week.

I can't imagine another school has ever spent this much on one non-rev sport.

While many Red Raider fans are thrilled by the influx of funds and the potential for athletic success, others, particularly rival fanbases, have raised concerns about the ethics of such aggressive NIL spending. Multi-million-dollar contracts and claims of exploiting “loopholes” have led some to cry foul.

However, defenders of Texas Tech’s strategy argue that other powerhouse programs have been making similar financial moves for years, albeit in a more secretive way. With NIL now in the open, Texas Tech is simply taking full advantage of the new rules and, in many ways, doing it better than anyone else.

The growing social media chatter surrounding Texas Tech’s spending has sparked a national debate, but the Red Raiders remain focused on their ultimate goal: building championship-caliber teams. With financial backing few schools can match, Texas Tech is capitalizing on its unique position to make a major rise in college athletics—whether critics like it or not.
