Angels Give Up on Pitcher, Send Him Back to Dodgers
Garrett McDaniels, a Rule 5 pick, has been returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers after clearing waivers. The Los Angeles Angels had designated him for assignment on June 9, marking the end of his short stint with the team.
Under the rules of the Rule 5 Draft, the Angels were required to keep McDaniels for the entire season to retain his rights. However, after he didn’t meet the one-year requirement, they had to return him to the Dodgers. McDaniels had been acquired by the Angels in the offseason, who purchased his contract from the Dodgers, and appeared in 10 games for them before a biceps injury sidelined him.
In his 10 MLB appearances, McDaniels posted a 5.91 ERA over 10.2 innings, allowing two home runs and striking out six batters. He did have six scoreless outings, though.
After his injury on May 3, McDaniels missed a month of action, and the Angels designated him for assignment upon his activation from the injured list. He made two rehab starts with Triple-A Salt Lake, pitching three innings, giving up four runs, and striking out four.
The Dodgers have now assigned McDaniels to their Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, marking his first time with the team’s Comets. McDaniels was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 2018 but chose to play college ball, ultimately going undrafted before the Dodgers signed him in 2022. He quickly advanced through the minors, reaching Double-A in just two seasons, and posted a solid 3.19 ERA in 2024 across multiple levels, including two scoreless outings late in the season with Double-A.
The Angels designated McDaniels for assignment to make room on the roster for reliever Shaun Anderson, who has since been DFA’d and elected free agency after Sam Bachman was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake.
