Todd McShay Analyzes Oklahoma QB John Mateer’s NFL Draft Potential
NFL Draft expert Todd McShay recently provided an in-depth analysis of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, shedding light on both the strengths and weaknesses of the 2026 draft prospect. Mateer, who transferred to Oklahoma from Washington State after a standout 2024 season, is quickly gaining attention.
McShay called Mateer’s tape study “breathtaking,” and it’s easy to see why—his impressive stats from 2024 include 29 touchdowns, over 3,000 passing yards, and an additional 800 rushing yards with 15 touchdowns.
As a dual-threat quarterback, Mateer’s potential is undeniable, assuming he stays healthy. After his standout year at Washington State, he now has the opportunity to lead the Sooners’ offense.
“Mateer is a breathtaking prospect to study in all aspects,” McShay noted. “He’s an undersized playmaker with exceptional quickness and speed. His release is lightning fast, and he puts energy into the ball, regardless of his arm angle or body position. I love his competitive fire and toughness, and when he extends plays (which he does often), he’s always focused on advancing the offense, never just running or retreating.”
McShay also praised Mateer’s ability to execute difficult throws and perform in clutch moments, especially in 2024. “He carried Washington State’s offense last year and is a massive upgrade for Oklahoma in 2025.”
However, McShay was quick to point out some areas where Mateer needs improvement. These aren’t necessarily dealbreakers, but they are aspects that will be important to watch as he heads into the 2025 season and beyond.
“Mateer’s footwork can be a mess at times, and his inconsistent ball placement is a direct result of that,” McShay explained. “His chaotic playing style also leads to poor decisions, despite his solid touchdown-to-interception ratio last season.”
With a new home in Norman but the same offensive coordinator, McShay hopes that Mateer has focused on refining his footwork and playing with more patience in the pocket, making better decisions based on progression reads.
“Improving in these areas is crucial for his NFL draft stock,” McShay continued. “The key for Mateer is to harness his natural playmaking ability while reducing the unpredictability in his game. Right now, I see him as a solid Day 2 prospect, but I’m really intrigued by his skill set, competitiveness, and potential for growth.”
Mateer’s journey at Oklahoma kicks off on August 30th against Illinois State, offering fans their first glimpse of him in action at his new school.
