Titans Coach Injects New Energy into Special Teams
The Tennessee Titans are feeling a renewed sense of energy, thanks to one of their new assistant coaches.
After a disastrous special teams performance in 2024, the Titans made a significant change by firing special teams coordinator Colt Anderson midseason and bringing in John Fassel during the offseason. Fassel, one of the most respected figures in the field, is already making a noticeable impact, even before the season has kicked off.
With 20 years of experience, the 51-year-old Fassel has quickly earned respect and brought a commanding presence to the special teams unit and coaching staff. “Fassel has brought command, along with a great personality, to the unit, and his players – kicker Joey Slye, punter Johnny Hekker, and long snapper Morgan Cox – have all been performing well,” team reporter Jim Wyatt shared.
Fassel previously spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys in the same role and coached the Rams from 2012-2019. During his time in Los Angeles, he worked closely with Hekker, so the two are now reunited in Nashville.
The established rapport and continuity Fassel brings will be key to the Titans’ improvement in the upcoming season.
While often overlooked, special teams are critical to a team’s success. They may not always make the highlight reel, but poor special teams play can easily cost a game. With Fassel now overseeing the unit, the Titans are in capable hands—a much-needed change for a team that only won three games last season.
Fassel and the Titans are set to return to training camp at the end of July.
