REPORTS: Rough News as Tennessee Volunteers Suffer Crucial Loss

Rough news has come in for the Vols.

While this development isn’t entirely unexpected, it still marks a significant blow to Josh Heupel and the Tennessee football program. A promising 4-star prospect who was once viewed as a key part of the Vols’ future has decided to withdraw his commitment.

On Wednesday night, 4-star wide receiver Tyran Evans took to social media to announce his decommitment from Tennessee. Just weeks ago, the idea of him reopening his recruitment seemed unlikely. However, Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes have ramped up their efforts to flip Evans — and that push appears to be gaining serious traction.

After a lot of prayer and thought, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of Tennessee.

Thank you to Coach Heupel, Coach Kelsey Pope, Coach Joey Halzle, and the entire Vol staff for believing in me. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family.

4-star WR Tyran Evans has decommitted from the Tennessee football team

This is a tough blow for Tennessee, but it felt somewhat inevitable once Mario Cristobal and his staff got the speedy wideout on campus for an official visit last weekend. That visit clearly made a strong impression on Evans, setting the stage for this week’s breaking news.

Evans now becomes a top name to watch for a commitment to Miami, as Cristobal is expected to push hard to secure his pledge quickly. Over the course of his recruitment, Evans received offers from more than 20 programs before originally committing to Tennessee in early January.

So where does Josh Heupel go from here after this disappointing turn of events? The focus may now shift to trying to flip 5-star receiver Tristen Keys, the nation’s top-ranked wideout. If Tennessee losing Evans means increasing efforts to land Keys, many Vols fans would gladly take that trade-off.

Keys was in Knoxville just last weekend for his official visit, and by all accounts, the visit went extremely well. Heupel and his staff made a strong impression, though Keys is still considered an LSU lean for the time being. While Evans was once expected to join the Vols next summer, that’s no longer the case.
