Reigning National League Cy Young winner Chris Sale is being placed on the injured list with a fractured left ribcage, the team announced Saturday.
This is yet another tough blow for a Braves team that’s endured a string of setbacks all season. Heading into Saturday’s matchup with a 34-40 record, Atlanta has been one of the most underwhelming teams in MLB this year. They’ve already seen key players like Reynaldo López, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Spencer Strider land on the injured list at different points.
Now they lose Chris Sale, who’s been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign. The 36-year-old lefty is putting together another stellar season, posting a 5-4 record with a 2.52 ERA and 114 strikeouts over 89.1 innings. If healthy, he was on track for yet another All-Star appearance—especially meaningful this year with the game set to be played in Atlanta.
A 15-year MLB veteran with stints on the White Sox, Red Sox, and Braves, Sale is an eight-time All-Star, a Gold Glove winner, and now a Cy Young Award recipient. He owns a career record of 143-87 and was a key contributor to Boston’s 2018 World Series championship. He also boasts eight seasons with double-digit wins.
Despite the setback, the Braves will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon when they host the Miami Marlins. First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. ET, with right-hander Grant Holmes (3-6, 3.97 ERA) taking the mound for Atlanta against Miami’s Eury Pérez (0-1, 6.43 ERA), who’s still working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
