The New York Yankees decided to move on from Pablo Reyes, but their crosstown rivals, the Mets, saw an opportunity.
After Reyes was designated for assignment to make room for Giancarlo Stanton’s return from the injured list, he cleared waivers and was given a choice—report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or become a free agent. He opted for free agency.
Now, the 31-year-old utility man is heading to Triple-A Syracuse in the Mets organization, where he’ll aim to work his way back to the majors.
Known primarily for his defensive versatility, Reyes hit just .194 in 31 at-bats this season, recording one double while filling in across the infield during the Yankees’ injury woes.
Reyes has previously suited up for the Pirates, Brewers, Red Sox, and even had a stint with the Mets.
Throughout his MLB career, he’s taken the field at every position except catcher, including five appearances as a pitcher.
With the Yankees this season, Reyes saw time at second base, third base, both corner outfield spots, and even pitched an inning.
The Mets likely saw value in his versatility and figured there’s no harm in adding a player who can cover so many roles.
First, though, Reyes will need to prove himself in Triple-A. If he does, he’ll get a shot at returning to the majors—this time on the other side of New York.
