Timberwolves Select Intriguing Playmaker in Latest Mock Draft
Following a rollercoaster playoff run, the Minnesota Timberwolves are eyeing an interesting prospect in the 2025 NBA Draft, according to a recent mock draft.
The Timberwolves had a mixed postseason performance—defeating the Lakers in five games and then overcoming the Warriors, but ultimately falling short in another five-game series to the Oklahoma City Thunder. After being knocked out in the Western Conference Finals for the second straight year, Minnesota holds the No. 17 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
The team is looking to add more playmaking and ball-handling depth to complement Anthony Edwards. A recent projection from Sports Illustrated suggests that the Wolves could select BYU’s Egor Demin with their first-round pick.
In his only season at BYU, Demin averaged 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, shooting 41.2% from the field and 27.3% from three.
The 19-year-old, originally from Moscow, Russia, played for Real Madrid before joining college basketball. Standing 6-foot-8 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, Demin brings good positional size, solid ball-handling, and strong passing ability—traits that could help him make an immediate impact in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves struggled with playmaking during their playoff series against the Thunder, where a lack of ball distribution allowed Oklahoma City to capitalize on turnovers and score in transition. Adding Demin to the lineup would help create easier looks for Edwards and other shooters by providing an additional playmaker on the floor.
Although Demin isn’t known for his athleticism or three-point shooting, his size and passing skills could make him a solid contributor as he develops into a capable defender at the next level. Plus, with Minnesota’s strong shooting performance from beyond the arc this past season, Demin’s shooting limitations may not be as much of a hindrance.
