Patriots Eye Potential Quarterback Addition

The New England Patriots are reportedly considering adding another quarterback before the NFL regular season kicks off.

While the team appears confident in their future with Drake Maye, their depth behind him raises some concerns. Maye is expected to be the starter, and veteran Josh Dobbs was added as a backup during free agency. However, their No. 3 quarterback spot is currently occupied by undrafted rookie Ben Wooldridge, which isn’t exactly reassuring.

Graham Wilker of Musket Fire recently highlighted some free agents the Patriots could still target, including quarterback C.J. Beathard.

“With Maye and Dobbs likely to make the roster in 2025, any additions would be to fill the QB3 role. Wooldridge is currently in that slot, but adding a veteran arm could be a smart move,” Wilker wrote. “If Dobbs were to get injured, relying solely on a UDFA as the backup to Maye could be risky. Beathard, with 13 career starts, brings valuable backup experience.”

Beathard had some promising moments early in his career, especially with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and 2018, but he never cemented himself as more than a backup. The 31-year-old spent time with the 49ers until 2020 and then moved to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, where he made just one start.

For a third-string quarterback, Beathard offers more experience than Wooldridge, who is untested at the NFL level. And realistically, if a team is forced to rely on its third-string QB, things may already be in trouble.

It remains to be seen if the Patriots will make a move to strengthen their quarterback depth.
