Michigan State Snags Four-Star WR Tyren Wortham in Big Recruiting Win
Michigan State’s recruiting efforts continue to heat up as the Spartans successfully flipped four-star wide receiver Tyren Wortham, who was previously committed to UCF. The Sarasota, Florida, native announced his commitment to Michigan State, as reported by On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Aside from UCF, Wortham also took official visits to Georgia and Kansas State. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Wortham was the 387th overall recruit in the 2026 class, the 57th-best player in Florida, and the 59th-ranked wide receiver nationally. He was in East Lansing for his official visit this weekend, which played a key role in his decision to switch commitments.
Securing a Florida recruit who was committed to a Florida school is a major win for Michigan State, showcasing the program’s growing influence and the staff’s ability to sell the benefits of East Lansing. Wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins has been particularly active in bringing top-tier talent to the Spartans, and this commitment adds another feather in his cap.
This momentum comes on the heels of Michigan State’s new Athletic Director, J Batt, pushing the narrative that a strong football program is key to building an elite athletic department. Wortham’s commitment boosts the Spartans’ already high expectations.
The Spartans have been especially successful in recruiting pass catchers recently, with four-star tight end Edward Whiting and wide receiver Zachary Washington also joining the fold, and wide receiver Samson Gash remaining a top priority.
Wortham is also a standout multi-sport athlete, competing in track & field. In his junior year, he ran an 11.32 in the 100-yard dash, which translates to a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash. On the football field, he had a breakout junior season, amassing 1,360 yards on 67 catches, averaging 20.3 yards per catch, and scoring 17 touchdowns. He was also named the wide receiver MVP at the Under Armour Next Camp in Orlando in 2025.
This is a huge addition for Michigan State, further strengthening their wide receiver corps alongside players like Nick Marsh, and it’s clear the Spartans aren’t slowing down on the recruiting trail.
