The Pittsburgh Steelers are finally making their summer moves, and they’ve started with a smart one.
PITTSBURGH – The Steelers kicked off their offseason transactions by signing safety DeShon Elliott to a two-year extension, keeping him with the team for the next three seasons. The deal is worth $12.5 million, a price Elliott certainly justifies. After a standout year in Pittsburgh, Elliott emerged as one of the defense’s key players, and locking him down long-term was a no-brainer. If his strong play continues, he and Minkah Fitzpatrick could form the best safety tandem the team has seen in years.
This extension goes beyond just keeping Elliott. It signals that the Steelers are not waiting around to extend T.J. Watt before addressing other contract matters. Watt will almost certainly get a deal done soon, but other players like Calvin Austin and Jaylen Warren are also on the team’s radar for potential long-term extensions.
They should absolutely be considered.
Even if Austin is destined to be the WR3 and Kaleb Johnson is expected to take over as the future starting running back, both players are important contributors. The Steelers want a dynamic one-two punch in the backfield, and Warren fits perfectly into that role. Austin has proven reliable and has improved steadily, making him a player worth keeping.
