Texas Longhorns Secure 5-Star EDGE Richard Wesley Over Oregon, Texas A&M, Ohio State

Richard Wesley, one of the top recruits in the 2026 class, has committed to Texas, choosing the Longhorns over a strong field of contenders, including USC, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Oregon—where he had briefly been committed from May 10-27 before decommitting.

Wesley told On3’s Hayes Fawcett that after taking an official visit to Oregon and initially considering them the top contender, Texas ultimately won him over during his final visit of the June recruiting period. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound EDGE rusher had reclassified from the 2027 class to 2026 earlier this spring, and his decision to do so hasn’t impacted his status as one of the nation’s most sought-after recruits. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Wesley is currently ranked as the No. 24 overall prospect, the No. 4 EDGE, and the No. 5 recruit in California.

During the 2024 season, Wesley tallied 44 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and nine sacks, showcasing his dominance on the field.

Longhorns’ Class Continues to Gain Momentum

Wesley is the 15th commit for Steve Sarkisian’s 2026 recruiting class, which now ranks No. 10 nationally in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. This commitment moves the Longhorns up four spots, further solidifying their position among the nation’s top programs. Wesley joins five-star quarterback Dia Bell as a key leader of the class. Bell has been committed to Texas for nearly a year and recently earned MVP honors at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles after a standout three-day performance.

Texas’ class continues to impress with seven other top-tier recruits, including four-star wide receiver Chris Stewart. On defense, the Longhorns have bolstered their line with three four-star defensive linemen and also have three strong commitments in the secondary.
