PSN wanted to share an update on Pitt basketball’s pursuit of elite Australian prospect Roman Siulepa.
Back in early May, I reported that Pitt was the frontrunner and was expected to land a commitment from Siulepa, the top-ranked prospect out of Australia.
At the time, we projected the decision would come in June. Now, with the month nearly over, some may wonder if the situation has shifted.
The answer: it hasn’t. While the timeline has been pushed back slightly, a trusted source tells PSN, “It’s 100% happening. It’s just taking time. It’ll happen.”
Securing a commitment from Siulepa would mark one of Jeff Capel’s biggest recruiting achievements at Pitt, as multiple scouts project the Australian standout to eventually reach the NBA.
As noted in previous reports, former Pitt star Lamar Patterson has played a key role in the recruitment. He and Siulepa are currently teammates in Australia. Pitt’s earlier success in signing 6’8″ Australian forward Henry Cody Lau also helped strengthen their pitch.
Roman Siulepa is a 6’7″, 220-pound small forward known for his dominant physicality. He’s been described as a relentless competitor who thrives on contact, is a nightmare in transition, and continues to grow into a force on the boards.
Though born in Australia, Siulepa has Samoan roots—something evident in his powerful frame. He’s an exceptional athlete who could easily excel in rugby if he chose to pursue it.
Before signing with the JackJumpers last year, Siulepa was one of the most heavily recruited international prospects but ultimately chose to remain in Australia.
He’s already built an impressive résumé, earning MVP honors at both the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp and the Australian U20 National Championship.
