SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants confirmed that Major League Baseball is investigating abuse allegations made by the wife of relief pitcher Sean Hjelle.
Caroline Hjelle posted a video on TikTok Friday featuring herself and the couple’s two sons, with a caption stating: “When my MLB husband abandons us on Mother’s Day a week after this (video was taken), once I finally discovered his affairs and stopped tolerating his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone.”
Following Saturday’s game, Sean Hjelle declined to comment on the claims, noting that he and his wife are in the process of finalizing their divorce.
“I’m confident I’ll be able to make a statement at some point,” he said. “I just don’t have a set timeline. I want to speak with the people handling the situation alongside me before I say anything publicly.”
The Giants issued a statement on Saturday acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and noted that MLB is managing the matter.
Manager Bob Melvin said prior to Saturday’s matchup with the Boston Red Sox that Hjelle would remain available to pitch.
“Obviously, we’re aware of the situation,” said manager Bob Melvin. “He informed me about it last night. We’ve spoken with MLB, and at this point, it’s in their hands, so I can’t comment any further.”
Hjelle was tagged with the loss in Friday night’s game against the Red Sox after giving up a go-ahead home run to Ceddanne Rafaela in the sixth inning.
So far this season, Hjelle has a 1-1 record with a 4.66 ERA across six appearances.
