Colts’ QB Battle: Daniel Jones Emerging as Possible Front-Runner
The Indianapolis Colts face a pivotal decision at the quarterback position as they prepare for the 2025 season. With both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones vying for the starting job, the Colts’ future at QB appears to be up in the air.
While Richardson has the physical tools, potential, and the ideal fit for Shane Steichen’s offensive scheme, Jones seems to be taking the lead in the competition. Richardson has missed a significant portion of the offseason due to a shoulder injury, which has allowed Jones to get more opportunities with the first team. As training camp approaches on July 22, Jones is emerging as the early favorite to start in Week 1.
This development raises questions about Richardson’s future with the Colts. Despite being the fourth-overall pick in the 2024 draft, Richardson could find himself on the outside looking in if Jones continues to perform well and wins the starting job. The Colts had high hopes for Richardson, despite his inexperience in college, and this potential shift isn’t what they envisioned when they selected him.
Jones, on the other hand, chose to come to Indianapolis because he believed it gave him the best chance to start again. So far, he’s made the most of his opportunity. With Richardson sidelined, Jones has taken full advantage of the reps and has gained a strong grasp of the offense. While he may not have the same upside as Richardson, he offers a more consistent and stable option at QB. In Steichen’s system, Jones has the potential to have a bounce-back year, especially with the Colts’ strong receiving corps and a running back like Jonathan Taylor to help balance the offense.
Jones has shown he can protect the football and run the offense efficiently. His ability to add rushing yards, with 2,179 career rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns, gives him a dynamic edge. Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron notes that Jones’ best seasons have come when he’s played within structure, and in Steichen’s system, he could thrive.
While Jones’ career has had ups and downs, he proved his worth in 2022 by leading the New York Giants to the playoffs, including a Wild Card win. That year, Jones posted career lows in interceptions (five) and helped the Giants compete despite limited weapons.
Though some fans may be hoping for Richardson to step up as the starter, Jones appears to be the leader in the QB competition, especially if Richardson’s injury issues persist. If Jones can stay healthy and continue performing well, he could have a career resurgence in Indianapolis, giving the Colts a solid, experienced option at QB.
