Jeanie Buss Speaks Out on Lakers’ Historic Franchise Sale
Jeanie Buss has finally broken her silence following the surprising sale of the Los Angeles Lakers. While the decision to sell caught many NBA fans off guard, those closely following the team weren’t as shocked.
Buss sold the Lakers to Mark Walter for a $10 billion valuation, though Walter, who already owned a portion of the team, didn’t have to pay the full $10 billion price tag.
Although Buss has sold the team, she is set to remain as the team’s governor for the time being, though the length of this tenure remains unclear. This marks the first time she has publicly addressed the sale, releasing a statement via social media. Based on her comments, the deal is expected to close sometime in the latter half of the year.
“The Buss family is incredibly proud to have overseen this remarkable franchise for nearly 50 years. Since our father purchased the Lakers, our goal has always been clear: to deliver a team that embodies Los Angeles’ passion and demands — a team that relentlessly pursues victory, while doing so with style and heart,” Buss said.
Buss will remain the governor of the Lakers “for the foreseeable future,” though that timeline remains flexible, especially given the shifting nature of ownership transitions.
As of now, Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka will still have a say in some of the team’s decisions. How long this arrangement lasts may depend on the Lakers’ success in the coming years. With the team aiming for a championship, both Buss and Pelinka’s roles could be secure — for now. Pelinka’s position, however, might be more vulnerable.
Despite managing a major trade for Luka Doncic, Pelinka’s future is uncertain, as new ownership often brings changes to the front office. Buss, who doesn’t have other major business ventures, intends to remain with the Lakers for as long as possible.
