The Cardinals made a few moves on Tuesday…
It was an eventful Tuesday for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team picked up another win over the Chicago Cubs, moving to within just 2.5 games of the division leaders. With two more games left in the four-game set, the surging Cardinals have a chance to close the gap to just a half-game by the series’ end — a timely hot streak as they push for the top spot.
Off the field, the Cardinals were also active. Prior to Tuesday’s game, they made several roster moves, including designating utility player José Barrero for assignment and claiming veteran Garrett Hampson off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. Additionally, young right-hander Michael McGreevy was called up to start against the Cubs, while Roddery Muñoz was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
The club issued the following statement:
“RHP Michael McGreevy has been recalled from Memphis (AAA). RHP Roddery Muñoz has been optioned to Memphis. INF/OF Garrett Hampson has been claimed off waivers from Cincinnati. He will wear uniform No. 13. INF/OF José Barrero has been designated for assignment.”
Barrero, once a top Reds prospect, joined St. Louis in the offseason but struggled to find his footing. In 22 games, he hit just .138/.194/.276 with one home run and three RBIs.
Hampson, an eight-year MLB veteran, has had stints with multiple teams including the Rockies, Marlins, Royals, Diamondbacks, and most recently the Reds. In 27 games this season, he’s hitting .167/.310/.188 with one double.
