Texas Tech Football: Red Raiders Target End to 17-Year Drought in 2025
Heading into the 2025 season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are stacked with talent, much of it coming from the transfer portal, with 21 new additions to the team. Many of these transfers are expected to make an immediate impact this fall. After finishing last season with an 8-5 record, head coach Joey McGuire has been proactive in bringing in championship-caliber players to push for a breakthrough season.
In order to win their first Big 12 championship and secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Red Raiders need to accomplish something they haven’t done since 2008: win at least 10 games in a season. The last time Texas Tech hit double-digit wins was in 2008, under legendary coach Mike Leach, when they finished 11-2. Since then, they’ve only managed nine wins once (in 2009).
The graphic also highlights some of Texas Tech’s Big 12 rivals, all of whom have posted double-digit win seasons more recently than the Red Raiders, with the lone exception being Kansas.
While Texas Tech appears to have the talent needed to end their 17-year drought in 2025, they’ll need more than just skill to reach that goal. Team chemistry and consistent execution will be key for the Red Raiders to meet the high expectations. If they can rise to the occasion, it could result in their first-ever Big 12 title and a spot in the CFP.
