The New Jersey Devils are shaping up to be a team to watch as the NHL Entry Draft and the start of free agency draw near. With ambitions to become a legitimate contender, the Devils are expected to be active this offseason.
One area the team could target for improvement is their top-six forward group. Among the most intriguing trade possibilities is Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas, who seems like a strong fit for New Jersey.
Necas, 26, has been the subject of trade rumors as he enters the final year of his contract. According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, Necas “wasn’t overly thrilled with his experience in Colorado” and is reportedly open to new opportunities.
Should the Avalanche make Necas available, the Devils would be smart to pursue him aggressively. He would represent a clear upgrade over Ondrej Palat in New Jersey’s top six and could thrive alongside Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt on the first line. His dynamic offensive talent would also be a major asset on the power play.
In the 2024-25 season, Necas posted a breakout year split between the Hurricanes and Avalanche, tallying 27 goals and setting career highs with 56 assists and 83 points in 79 games. That kind of production could be exactly what the Devils need to elevate their game and compete with the league’s elite. It remains to be seen whether New Jersey makes a move, but Necas is certainly a name to keep an eye on.
