Analyst Raises Concerns About NIL Impact on Ohio State Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes, long a powerhouse in college recruiting, may face new challenges in attracting top talent due to changes in NIL rules.
While Ohio State has maintained a competitive edge in recruiting under head coach Ryan Day, the recent settlement in the House vs. NCAA case has introduced a new dynamic. Schools now have a set budget they can allocate toward NIL deals, which helps level the playing field. While the Buckeyes will still be a strong contender, their advantage might not be as pronounced as it once was.
Ryan Stano from Scarlet & Game has raised concerns about how these changes could affect Ohio State. He points out that the Buckeyes will likely need to allocate a significant portion of their NIL funds to retain current players, leaving less available for new recruits.
As a result, Ohio State might take a more conservative approach to NIL spending on recruits, which could be a shift in strategy. “Ohio State might be a little more frugal when it comes to using NIL on recruits, but this is something Buckeyes fans will need to get used to, as it’s a philosophy Ryan Day will likely continue,” Stano noted.
While this won’t prevent Ohio State from competing for top talent, it will make recruiting more challenging for Day and his staff, forcing them to get creative with how they manage their resources.
Stano also emphasized that Ohio State’s focus will be on keeping current players satisfied, noting that NIL money should not be the primary driver for recruiting. “If a recruit’s top priority is how much NIL money they’ll receive, Ryan Day won’t pursue them further,” he added.
Although this shift in approach may concern some fans, it’s worth noting that Ohio State is not the only program facing these new limitations.
