Oklahoma City Thunder Reportedly Sign Sharp Shooter Payton Sandfort
Payton Sandfort, who spent all four years of his college career at Iowa, is reportedly signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
In his senior season, Sandfort averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, while shooting 40.7% from the field and 34.0% from beyond the arc in 33 games. Despite his solid performance, he went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Givony reports that the 22-year-old 6’7″ wing will join the Thunder, a team fresh off their 2025 NBA Championship victory. Known for his impressive three-point shooting and versatile contributions, Sandfort made a name for himself at Iowa with his ability to fill the stat sheet, including assists and blocks.
The Thunder, having a deep and talented roster after their championship run, likely have limited space for new players, so Sandfort could potentially spend time with their G League affiliate.
As Givony noted in February 2024, Sandfort emerged as one of the top shooters in college basketball, particularly in Big Ten play, where he shot 41% from three. His 6’7″ frame and smooth shooting motion make him a natural fit for the NBA.
After finishing the 2024-25 season with a remarkable 68-14 record as the top seed in the Western Conference, the Thunder went on to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Indiana Pacers to win the title.
Per NBA Communications, the Thunder’s 84-21 combined regular-season and playoff record in 2024-25 is among the best in NBA history, joining the ranks of the 2015-16 Warriors and the 1995-96 and 1996-97 Chicago Bulls.
