Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze wasn’t at the helm when the Tigers suffered back-to-back losses to Penn State in 2021 and 2022—but he’s recruiting like he hasn’t forgotten. His latest move, flipping four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone from the Nittany Lions, sent shockwaves through University Park and left James Franklin’s staff scrambling for answers about the future of their 2026 QB room.
The Nazareth (PA) native had recently participated in Penn State camps and seemed firmly committed to his in-state program. That made his sudden switch to Auburn all the more surprising.
“Falzone’s departure comes not long after what looked like a solid connection with Penn State,” wrote Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record. “Though still developing, he brings elite athleticism and speed, packaged in a 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame.”
It remains unclear whether Franklin and his staff will now aim to bring in a second quarterback for the 2026 cycle—something they haven’t done since signing both Drew Allar and Beau Pribula in 2022.
Falzone cited his faith as a major factor in his decision to commit to Auburn, at least for now.
“Auburn is a place steeped in tradition,” Falzone told 247 Sports. “My family and I talked a lot about the balance of elite football and strong academics. It offers everything we’re looking for. Most importantly, the school and community are rooted in faith and family, which means a lot to us. I can’t wait to get started. War Eagle.”
Despite potentially having to wait behind Jackson Arnold—who could still have two years left—and Deuce Knight—who may redshirt in 2025—Falzone has committed to the Tigers. And in doing so, Auburn may have just earned its most meaningful victory over Penn State in recent memory.
