Chargers reunited with the wrong player and it’s painfully obvious
The Los Angeles Chargers made a questionable decision by reuniting with the wrong player. Heading into the offseason, it was clear that the Chargers needed to address their wide receiver position, especially since they lacked reliable options behind Ladd McConkey in 2024.
Although Quentin Johnston showed promise, his inconsistency and troubling drop rate held him back from having a breakout year, despite his potential as a first-round pick.
Many expected the Chargers to make a big splash in free agency or pursue a major trade. However, the top two receivers available, Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin, both re-signed with their teams, and Los Angeles passed on trading for D.K. Metcalf and George Pickens.
Instead, the Chargers opted to bring back Mike Williams, despite the fact that the 30-year-old had a lackluster season with just 21 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown across two teams. What they didn’t do, however, was re-sign Keenan Allen.
For reasons unknown, the Chargers chose Williams—who hasn’t been effective since tearing his ACL in 2023—over Allen, who still managed 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns with the Chicago Bears last season.
To make matters worse, Williams was already dealing with an undisclosed injury during the offseason, casting doubt on their decision to sign him instead of Allen.
The Chargers could have easily signed both receivers if they truly wanted to keep the core together. They have the cap space for it, and it’s unlikely that the 33-year-old Allen is looking for a big, long-term deal. A one-year, affordable contract for Allen could have been a reasonable move, especially since he’s expressed interest in returning to LA.
So what exactly are the Chargers waiting for? Are they that confident in Williams’ recovery? Are they planning to rely heavily on rookies like Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith? Or do they think Johnston will finally step up after a couple of underwhelming seasons?
If the Chargers had chosen Allen and passed on Williams, that would have made more sense given Williams’ current situation. But choosing the latter over Allen? That decision is hard to justify.
