The New York Rangers are aiming for a playoff push this season and could benefit from strengthening their blue line.

This offseason, the Rangers signed Vladislav Gavrikov to serve as a shutdown defenseman but moved on from K’Andre Miller, a key offensive presence on defense. In response, Heavy.com floated a trade idea involving San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro.

Proposed Trade:

Rangers receive:

  • Mario Ferraro

  • 2026 fourth-round pick (from Florida)

Sharks receive:

  • Carson Soucy

  • 2026 first-round pick (from Carolina)

Ferraro, 26, is entering the final year of his four-year, $13 million deal and has frequently surfaced in trade rumors. He posted 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 78 games last season on a struggling Sharks squad, suggesting he could boost his production on a stronger Rangers team. Acquiring him would cost New York a first-round pick and Soucy, who is in the last year of his three-year, $9.75 million contract and could serve as a trade asset for San Jose at the deadline. Soucy had 4 goals and 9 assists in 75 games last season.

Ferraro Open to a Move
Although Ferraro hasn’t formally requested a trade, NHL insider David Pagnotta reports that he would welcome a change of scenery. With the Sharks adding three new defensemen, a deal could happen sooner rather than later. San Jose is expected to draw multiple suitors for Ferraro’s services, and the Rangers remain a logical destination.

Rangers’ Defensive Focus
This offseason, New York’s primary focus has been shoring up its defense. Gavrikov was a marquee addition, with general manager Chris Drury highlighting his size, reach, competitiveness, and defensive reliability. The Rangers finished 19th in goals allowed last season and aim to improve that ranking significantly.

Ferraro’s Fit
Earlier this offseason, The Athletic’s Shayna Goldman identified Ferraro as an ideal target for the Rangers, slotting in as the second left-shot defenseman behind Gavrikov. Across 408 career NHL games, Ferraro has tallied 17 goals and 74 assists for 91 points, bringing both experience and offensive upside to the blue line.
