Braves Reunite with Familiar Face (Again), Another Starter Heads to 60-Day IL
The Atlanta Braves have brought back a familiar pitcher for the third time this season, while another starter is now officially out long-term.
Guess who’s back? Yep, Jesse Chavez is back again. The Braves announced Sunday that they’ve selected right-hander Jesse Chavez to the Major League roster. In a corresponding move, left-hander Dylan Dodd is heading back to Triple-A, and right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach is being placed on the 60-day injured list.
Before diving into the return of Chavez, let’s address the big news regarding Schwellenbach. His move to the 60-day IL was expected, much like the recent situation with Chris Sale. From the start, it was clear he would miss significant time.
Schwellenbach, who suffered a fractured right elbow (specifically, a coronoid fracture near his right ulna), is hoping to return this season. This type of injury is typically linked to elbow dislocations or instability but is considered a small fracture. Thankfully, his UCL and flexor muscles were unaffected based on tests. He was placed on the IL retroactive to June 29, and the team hopes he could return in late August or early September.
This season, Schwellenbach has posted a solid 3.09 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 17 starts. The Braves definitely felt his absence during a bullpen-heavy day on Saturday, when it took seven pitchers to cover 10 innings in place of his usual start. Manager Brian Snitker made it clear he’d prefer to avoid that approach going forward.
As for Chavez, this marks his third time being added to the Braves’ 40-man roster this year. Both previous stints ended with Chavez being designated for assignment after one appearance. In those outings, he allowed two runs over three innings. Chavez has established himself as a reliable long-relief option for the Braves over the years.
Meanwhile, Dodd returns to Triple-A after a solid showing with the big league team. He posted a 3.75 ERA across 11 appearances, starting off with eight scoreless outings before allowing five earned runs in his last three appearances.
