Guardians Must Act Quickly Before MLB Trade Deadline
The Cleveland Guardians have received a stark warning ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and it’s advice they should seriously consider.
At 40-46 heading into their Saturday night game against the Detroit Tigers, the Guardians find themselves slipping further away from playoff contention—an unexpected turn of events for a team that was atop the AL Central last season and made a run to the ALCS.
The 2025 season has been far less kind, putting Cleveland in a vulnerable position as the trade deadline approaches.
So, what should the Guardians do? Should they go all-in and buy? Should they sell off some assets? Or maybe take a more balanced approach?
Cleveland president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti seems uncertain, noting that the market may take time to develop with many teams still in contention. However, Brandon Glick of Away Back Gone warns that too much patience could prove costly for the Guardians.
“If they see themselves as buyers, it would be wise to act ahead of the market—especially for one of the few impact bats available—so they don’t get caught in a bidding war for players with limited team control,” Glick wrote. “Alternatively, if they decide to sell, they could flood the market with high-value assets like Carlos Santana, Lane Thomas, Shane Bieber, and even Emmanuel Clase. They could ignite a bidding war if they enter early, attracting interest from multiple teams.”
Glick’s point is valid. Cleveland needs to make a clear decision soon to position themselves as either buyers or sellers, which would allow them to influence the market and make beneficial moves. If they wait too long, they risk overpaying for assets or settling for less-than-ideal returns.
The deadline may not be until July 31, but it’s approaching faster than they might think.
