Bucks Encouraged to Sign Future Hall of Famer to Replace Damian Lillard in Bold Move
An NBA writer is advocating for the Milwaukee Bucks to sign a Hall of Fame guard following their decision to part ways with star Damian Lillard.
At the start of free agency, the Bucks made a significant move by waiving and stretching Lillard’s contract—spreading out the remaining $100 million he was owed over five years, as opposed to the two years he was initially signed for. This move reduced Lillard’s cap hit enough to accommodate the signing of center Myles Turner, though it also means his contract remains on the books for a longer period.
The decision came after Lillard, a multi-time All-Star, ruptured his Achilles during the NBA playoffs, which would keep him out for the entire upcoming season. With no production expected and over $50 million owed to him, the Bucks opted to cut ties.
However, the Bucks face a dilemma as they were already thin at guard before releasing Lillard. Now, their depth at that position is even more depleted for both the short and long term.
Given the team’s need for a guard, Bleacher Report’s Rik Beaston believes Chris Paul would be a strong fit for Milwaukee:
“If Paul decides to return to the court and joins the Bucks, he could make a difference in the playoffs for a team with championship aspirations,” Beaston wrote. “He wouldn’t have to be the star anymore, just a complementary piece. With key Eastern Conference players like Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton sidelined by Achilles injuries, a Paul-led Bucks squad could have a real shot at the title.”
“Given the frustration from their star player and questions surrounding the team’s championship window, this is a move the Bucks need to make to keep their hopes of a second Larry O’Brien Trophy alive,” Beaston added.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Bucks are indeed interested in signing Chris Paul, but he is reportedly prioritizing warmer climates and being closer to family when making his decision.
While Paul would bring valuable depth to the team and address a key need, his impact on winning has steadily decreased as his athleticism and stamina decline. At this point in his career, Paul offers leadership and experience, but he is no longer the game-changer he once was.
