Cardinals Adjust Rotation to Give Ace Sonny Gray Two Starts Before All-Star Break

The St. Louis Cardinals are making strategic moves to build some momentum before the All-Star break.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Monday that the Cardinals are altering their rotation to ensure ace Sonny Gray makes two starts prior to the break.

The revised schedule has Gray pitching on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, followed by Andre Pallante on Wednesday and Miles Mikolas on Thursday. Gray is also scheduled to start again on Sunday against Atlanta. Meanwhile, Matthew Liberatore will get five days of rest before his start on Friday, and Michael McGreevy is a potential candidate for the Sunday game as well.

This decision isn’t surprising, considering the Cardinals’ rotation has been a weak spot recently. With both Miles Mikolas and Erick Fedde struggling, giving Gray an extra opportunity to start makes sense, as he’s been the club’s most reliable pitcher this season.

Gray has been solid, with a 3.51 ERA over 17 starts, striking out 107 batters and walking just 18 in 100 innings pitched. His performance has been key to keeping the Cardinals’ rotation afloat, and if the team hopes to make a playoff push, they’ll need him firing on all cylinders. With pitching continuing to be a concern, the Cardinals are doing everything they can to set themselves up for success ahead of the All-Star break.
